Main road bridge south of Rushen Abbey, Ballasalla
Date(s): mid 20th century
Place made: Ballasalla
Scope & Content: Although the orginal caption on the photograph says 'Monks Bridge, Ballasalla' this is in fact the main road bridge south of Rushen Abbey, taken before widening. The view is looking upstream from close to where the war memorial now is; the high wall in the background to the left is the boundary wall of the abbey gardens. You can’t achieve this view now because the newer part of the bridge has been constructed on this side of the bridge, but if you look at the underside of the arch (obviously not whilst the river is in spate!) you can see the seam in the stonework where the newer part of the bridge has been added. The bridge now is about two and a half times as wide as it was at the time of the first Ordnance Survey around 1870 – quite a difference!

This isn't the 'Monks Bridge', it has one arch - the Monk's bridge has two - - Matty Cunningham Report this
You're right Matty. The caption on the original photograph has it as 'Monks Bridge Ballasalla' but this can't be right. I wonder where it is? I'll set this as a question to our collections team here today. - Jude Report this
