Re-siting of the Santon war memorial

Date(s): 1975

Scope & Content: The memorial was re-dedicated on 17th October, 1975. The Bishop at this time was the Right Rev. Vernon Nicholls (1974-1983). The original site was the eastern corner of the junction of the New Castletown Road and Ballavale Road. Almost as soon as it was erected in 1920 road traffic accidents occurred quite regularly nearby, and the New Castletown Road became more and more busy. It was reported in 1950 that the annual remembrance service had not been held at the memorial for some years because of this. Following discussions between Santon Parish Commissioners and the Highway Board, it was agreed to relocate the memorial in 1975.

Re-dedication performed by the bishop with the clergy, choir and public in attendance.
