Sod cottage of Mrs Mary Gilrea, Jurby
Date(s): 1897
Creator(s): Stubbs, F.W.
Place made: Jurby
Scope & Content: In this view the characteristic roof profile of this type of dwelling can be seen, where the domed ridge rises at the chimney end. There was usually no window and the hearth was often in the centre of the space with the smoke accumulating and cooling in the roof space before filtering out through the thatch, or via a smoke-hole or rudimentary chimney.
