Hi Mike, superstition around this word started in the fishing community and has been (comparatively) recently adopted by the wider Manx community. In fishing communities many animals were called by a different name by fishermen, in 1937 it was maybe less of a concern for an agricultural community like Sulby. - Hannah (Manx National Heritage) Report this
