Joey Dunlop, TT (Tourist Trophy) rider (1952-2000)

Scope & Content: Joseph (Joey) Dunlop was born in Northern Ireland in 1952. He is widely considered the greatest road racer of all time. Known affectionately as ‘Yer Maun’, his laid back approach endeared him to a generation of Isle of Man Tourist Trophy (TT) fans.

Dunlop competed in 101 TT races from 1976 until 2000, in a variety of classes from the Ultra-Lightweight to the Senior TT and has the distinction of winning three TT hat-tricks. He won 26 TT races, a record that will be hard to beat. His trademark yellow Arai helmet, together with the iconic number 3, are a familiar sight on countless T-shirts.

Dunlop was also a well-known and respected publican in his home town of Ballymoney, Northern Ireland. He was awarded an MBE for his contribution to sport, and later an OBE for his charity work. Joey was tragically killed during racing at Tallinn, Estonia in 2000, but still inspires a devoted legion of fans.

The Dunlop racing dynasty includes Robert, the younger brother of Joey, and Robert's racing sons, William and Michael. Robert died at the North West 200 in 2008 and William was killed in a practice crash at Skerries in 2018. Michael continues to race at the TT.
