Balconied Manchester Hotel, Douglas

Date(s): 1932

Creator(s): Frowde, John James

Scope & Content: On the back of this photograph Frowde writes, 'Clarendon Hotel, behind lamp, was in 1842 Directory (also earlier and later), the drapers shop, with a wine and spirit licence, of N. B. Samuel Harris' father. Fairy Ground. Bit of a complicated architecture on right with swinging sign of Jenny Atkinson's 'Ellan Vannin Arms' protruding, 'Bulls Head' Inn on left and behind the lamp a building (Clarendon Hotel now) on the corner of Harris' Lane, which a century back was the Hosiery Store of Sammy Harris, father of High Bailiff Harris, and who, (in an 1845 Directory) also held a licence for wines and spirits. Weird combination'.
