11Seneschal Lane, Douglas
Date(s): 1932-1934
Creator(s): Frowde, John James
Scope & Content: On the back of this photograph Frowde writes, 'No.11 Seneschal Lane 'dead on'. A feature of many of these old houses was a lack of balance, of set purpose. Here, one window, left of projecting 'gable-attic', and two on the other side of it. The old 'Ellan Vannin Arms' in the Fairy Ground is designed, as to the front elevation on somewhat similar lines. No straight roof-lines then; hence the elusive charm of many of these old buildings. Another pleasing feature I have omitted to mention in the other Routes, was the trick the old builders had, of 'rounding' the angle of a house. As in Nos. 4 + 5 Seneschal Lane, & the rear of the 'Hare & Hounds' in Durie Lane. [sketch] All right angles these dm/s'.
