Smagg's house, Douglas
Date(s): 1932-1934
Creator(s): Frowde, John James
Scope & Content: On the back of this photograph Frowde writes, 'When, a few years back, the Corporation whitewashed such houses in this area as had been acquired by them - at the approach of summer yearly; one evening, after dark, I took a stroll along Fort St., up into S. Barnabas' Square, and along Seneschal Lane, to the top of the rise above Smagg's. It was a surprising experience. Looking down into a walled in space all round. All buildings brilliant white in the light from the lamp. Not a soul in sight. The [sketch] striking roof curve of No.5 accentuated. The lamp hidden by the staircase, but the fine tracery standing out vividly in the rear window. I often repeated the experience'.
