Looking down to the Arch, South Quay, Douglas
Date(s): 1932
Creator(s): Frowde, John James
Scope & Content: On the back of this photograph Frowde writes, 'Looking down to the Arch, S. Quay. M. Baume, the last of whose money purchased the Nicholson pictures in the Museum, lived for many years in the top room of the outlet near the Arch behind the lamp-post. See Mrs Forrest's Manx Reminiscences (pub. 1894) Full story regarding the old miser Baume. Thomas Henry Royston was one of many who used to collect snails for him. He would lower a can on a string, from the outlet window, for the gasteropodous molluscs. These, with spring cabbage, were his diet mostly. See Mrs Forrest's story for the unsavoury details - better unread'.
