Interior of Old St Matthew's church, Douglas
Date(s): c.1898
Creator(s): Frowde, John James
Scope & Content: On the back of this photograph Frowde writes, 'The Chancel, quaint pews & old-time pulpit, with sounding-board, of Old S. Matthews, just prior to demolition. Old Wm. Gell, baker & poet of a sort, rhymer would fit him, & a clever one at that, died at 87 last week in July '34. He was always present at those early morning Sunday Communions, was a Lay Reader, & a great help to Canon Taggart in many ways. An extraordinarily well-read man, considering his handicaps, and had made a special study of astronomical matters. 27.6.33 Hugh Taggart stated that one of the box pews either side of the (Holy Table) Altar was tenanted by Capt. Gold[smith?], the Hermitage, now Vicarage'.
