Painting of the Mona's Isle, Douglas
Date(s): c.1843
Creator(s): Frowde, John James
Scope & Content: On the back of this photograph Frowde writes, 'Mona's Isle (I) discharging passengers into rowing boats for conveyance to the Red Pier. The Old Courthouse thereon; the smoke from Winram's shipyard, and the rampart of the Douglas Old Fort on the Pollock Rocks, etc., etc. The old Douglas Fort rampart clearly seen with a magnifier to the R. of the Red Pier Light. Also the dummy batlements erected for Sir Wm Hillary & designed by Welch. Long story, written in full in notes. About 1843, (or 4) David Cox was working in Lancashire & the North of England, painting views in oil mostly. This picture, especially the figures & foliage in the foreground is very reminiscent of his style. Photo of painting in the Museum. Detail sharp enough for considerable magnification. The painting is about 3'6" horizontally. - 38" x 26" (measured)'.
