Scope & Content: Photograph taken by David Octavius Hill, c.1846, who, according to the Encyclopedia Brittanica, was a Scottish painter and pioneer of "pictorial photography" who took up Fox-Talbot's calotype method about 1846 and "produced portraits which for genuine pictorial quality have perhaps never been surpassed".
