Scope & Content: Photograph of Thomas Henry Cannon, Postman at Andreas, the Smeale and the Lhen. Taken 1896 Shows the first tricycle used in the North for mail delivery. A bag was attached to the back for letters, and a box, with G.P.O., was fastened to the side for parcels. The man leaning on the wall is mister William Radcliffe, then schoolmaster of Andreas, later of London and author of Methuens Guide. His son, Willie Radcliffe (in petticoats) is receiving the letters, and Mrs. Radcliffe is on opposite side of the gate. Boy on gate is a friend and the photo was taken by Mr. Newman, Mrs. Radcliffes brother at Andreas School House. Age of Postman at that time about 30.

Thomas was married to an ancestor of mine, Catherine Quarry. He was born in Maughold and about 35 in this picture, and lived at Balleigh at this time. He went on to work for Ramsey Harbour Board. - Andrew Griffiths Report this
