Harbour area, Douglas
Date(s): 1898-1899
Creator(s): Frowde, John James
Scope & Content: On the back of this photograph Frowde writes, 'Harbour area. Own plate. c.1898-9. Harbour scene'. Additional notes: 'Old coach office next to Royal Hotel' : 'The old Coach Office (for the out-town coaches in my boyhood,) still there next S. to the Royal Hotel. When this was Hills P.H., Booth's Guide, 1856 has a woodcut of the Royal and the small adjacent building with on it the words COACH OFFICE. Blore's 'Cigar Chest' (see whole plate and 14 and 10 series,) was on the corner as in this print, with the old mile-stone and the tobacco leaf decoration which has been a puzzle to some generations since that time. The first tobacco I grew solved the puzzle for me'.
