Duke of Athol's House, Douglas
Date(s): 1934
Creator(s): Frowde, John James
Scope & Content: On the back of this photograph Frowde writes, 'Duke of Athol's House in Durie Lane, which is about 11 feet wide & very difficult to get this view. Mr Kneale the Antiquary (p70 of his Guide between 1850-1895) says "The edifice in Durie Lane, which has fallen into decay, was for some time, prior to the erection of Castle Mona, the residence of the late Duke of Athole. It was placed at his service during his visits to the Island, by the lady of the mansion". PC done. Elevation of 'Step down Inn' shewn by its roofmark on cottage wall L. Durie House dates from 1728? Fancy my informant, Mr Jackson (Customs) mixed up the date of No4 St B. Sq., 1782 & 28, reversed the final figures; still his figure may be near the mark. The roof slates are rude enough, but better than those of houses much later'.
