From east end of Durie Lane into Fairy Ground, Douglas
Date(s): n.d. [1932-1934]
Creator(s): Frowde, John James
Scope & Content: On the back of this photograph Frowde writes, 'From E. end of Durie Lane into Fairy Ground. House on R. known in fairly recent times as Elliot's, with sloping cellar door was a former Inn - name appears to be forgotten, which is not remarkable. Pretty much every house in this region was, at one time or another a pub. And those not pubs were mostly alehouses, with a cask outside the entrance to indicate the fact. I have noted that in 1880, C.N. Raby, the leading auctioneer, was the wholesale agent for Ind Coope's Ales. Remember him well. Portly gent lived in Adelaide Ter. & wore about 4oz. of gold seals pendant from his 'fob'. Insurance agent also - I had to pay the premiums yearly as a boy - which accounts for my memory of him. House on R. past Elliot's, Belshaw's - definitely an Inn'.
