Douglas bay

Date(s): n.d.

Scope & Content: On the back of this photograph Frowde writes, 'Loch Parade Church. First building on Loch Parade finished, also Seaforth House (Mr A Robertson, builder), first boarding house on the LP. There seem to be some other or others (on N side) extreme left. Castle Inn still in picture, so prior to 1880 anyhow. Falcon Cliff Pavilion not built, nor Derby Castle Pavilion. Strathallan Hotel is within the turreted porchway as in adv[ertisement in Brown's 1880 Directory. The large house and square stable and turrets still there, and a structure like a tram shed, same side of road, by the sea, two openings S side of entrance - evidently the mass of dark masonry in the other panoramic pictures of the bay prior to 1880. Next on E side of the present harbour master's office and between it and the shed 'The Steam Packet Vaults' The above in New Bond St - now rear of Clarendon Hotel and part of it Blore's Cigar Chest, by the old Custom's hut (masked by sail, but shears showing), comes up well with magnifier, showing the statues on the roof and the little figure projecting from the corner of the walls. The widow's house at end (N) of Muckle's Gate, fronting St Barnabas' steeple in picture, occupies a space on a photo-litho (G A Denn) copy of a plan of Douglas shewing Mr Culshaw's scheme for the projected new street from Prospect Hill to the Pier, coming out at Bath Place. The said space is designated RUIN. The Culshaw project was in 1872, and the original plan of which the photo-litho was a copy, may have been of earlier date.*(Taken from 1868 Ordnance Survey of the town. All sections of this in the Museum.) It belongs to Mr A H Curphey of the Museum, and shews a number of the old courts I knew of, but was unable to locate:- Kelly's Court down by the Barrack St Mission to rear of Hanover St School. Gelling's Court of Lord St. Corran's Court, or lane, off John St (some yards east of present fire station). Bacon's Court, parallel to Corrin's Court (or lane) a little further east, off John St. There is also a house in Athol St styled RUIN, I think on S side, and in the 1860 photos that may be a vacant space that gives a view of a house on N side of the street. In the Culshaw plan (ends at Wellington St N and Church St W) many small spaces at rear of old houses contain the letters 'WT' - water tank? And the widths of roads and lanes, etc, is described as BM (?) and figures after. This being a photo-litho made in 1872 of a plan covering probably the whole of what was the then Douglas, it may be that the whole plan, may still be available for reference. Ask at M[anx] M[useum]. See side notes. All these plans referable. Note the Inn between the Tide Surveyors Offices and the Steam Packet Company's Offices. I always knew there was a pub there but did not know its name. Fire placeable now'.
