Scope & Content: On the back of this photograph Frowde writes, 'Got to shew the old School of Art in my school days, where Clarke's Peveril House stood later. It extended from the entrance in Castle St, to the line of the Promenade buildings today. W J Merrit was our art master. This would be about 1881 or 2. In 1886-7 the part in the picture was a show of some sort. Bertie Hemensley had a free ticket given to Mr and Mrs Hemensley, his parents , for admission to this affair and he used it in conjunction with Arthur Williams (of Todhunter's) who had all the 'neck' requisite. The man at the entrance said 'this is for Mr and Mrs Hemensley', and Arthur (who stammered badly) said 'Yes, I am Mr Hemensley, but my wife couldn't come, so I brought a friend with me.' As the pair of them would be about 17 then, the cheeky self-assurance and the humour of the business, appealed to the door-keeper, and laughing heartily, he passed the pair of them through. I think the place was then known as the 'Aquarium', or possibly had been earlier and the name persisted. Okell's house in picture, but no brewery or chimney at rear, as in other picture taken halfway down E side of Derby Square:- clear view of old Stanley Terrace and the old houses in Prince's Rd. The portion of the Falcon Hotel on the Promenade at Brown's Slip not built then, only the old Falcon at rear, in Castle St then in being (as now from structural point of view). The whole of Marina Terrace in full view; the Marina Hotel (J J Harwood's ? ves) on left of it. Remember him well, as he used to do the touching up of our dials for the Grammar School plays in what is now Reece's Billiard Saloon in the old Masonic Hall building. Ballaquayle Farm 2 1/2" from R, 1 1/2" from top, still there at this period'.
