The butter market, Douglas showing The Douglas Medical Hall
Date(s): c.1898
Scope & Content: On the back of this photograph Frowde writes, ''The Butter Market's trips to Town' (see 'Saturday's trips to Town' with the striped bag in the late seventies - Mr Sowden, 1, Post Office Place, for oatmeal and barley-meal - Mr Kaye the Chandler's in Lord Street for tallow dips - my mother's country friend in the butter market for eggs and butter, - salt - and the butcher's stall under canvas for the 'thick end of the flat rib.' A phrase I have never heard since those times). The high crowned bowlers with the narrow brims were in vogue about 1887. Tom Keig took the picture from the porch over the door of the British Hotel, and he often remarks, that he had only to turn to the left and he could have photographed Gelling's Court, of which, probably, no picture exists. I have since got several views from the Head in which one gets 'peeps' into it, including one of the portico entrance to Todhunter's. Rev Theophilus Talbot? 4 inches from L(eft) and 2 1/2 from top in the tall hat. He had the doubtful honour of christening me in 1868, when a Wesleyan minister. Once canvassed (with Alderman Corlett), his reverence in the interests of Mr W J Kermode who was standing for the Keys; and both of us listened to a half hour's lecture before we could get in a word, and then were informed that he had promised his vote to Mr J W Church - brewer. And that is pretty ancient history. About 1898. See photo of Sam's boarded up premises - where corner of Bank is now: ads 'Vote for Kermode'. An ad in this lot advertises the Examiner Annual (!?) and gives the date 1898 ? Check. Env IV, 10'.
