Scope & Content: Content comprises for the most part photocopies of letters in German to Stern's wife Else (Elizabeth), with translations; German passports (Reisepass) of Eugen and Elisabeth Stern, the former marked with a large J; printed circular in German and English dated 1 June 1940 entitled 'To the Internees of the Isle of Man / An Die Internierten auf der Insel Man' signed by Lt-Col S W Slatter, Commandant, Isle of Man Internment Camps; correspondence from June 1940 regarding Mrs Stern's change of address and communicating developments to her husband; notification stamped Central Internment Camp 15 August 1940 regarding Eugen Stern's papers currently impounded and held in the camp office; circular issued to refugees from German and Austria by Otto Schiff at the German Jewish Aid Committee, Broadwood House, Lady Margaret Rd, Sunningdale, Berks; copies of photographs including Eugen pictured in 1930.

Also reference colour images of leather purses and a writing set, believed by family members to have been made by Eugen during his stay in Central Camp and images of crafted flowers and other ornamentation made by Elsa (Elisabeth) - she earned the couple's living with such accessories from 1941 to 1950 when the couple lived in Walsall.

Administration / Biographical History: Eugen Israel Stern was born in Pecs (Funfkirchen), Hungary on 9 March 1891. He arrived as a Jewish refugee from Vienna via Nijwegen at Harwich on 29 August 1939 and was interned from May 1940 at various camps including Lincoln, Huyton and from 16 June until at least 15 August 1940 at Central Camp, Douglas. By 18 September 1940 he was an in-patient in the County Sanitorium at Harefield, England. With his wife Else he lived in Walsall, Staffs between 1941 and 1950 returning that year to Austria where he died after 3 months. His wife stayed in Vienna where she died in 1979.
