Scope & Content: M.Litt Museum and Gallery Studies dissertation submitted to the School of Art History, University of St Andrews, Scotland. The dissertation received a distinction (first class). The dissertation focused on the role museums and heritage services have in the formation, development and personification of national and cultural identity with special reference to Manx National Heritage (MNH) on the Isle of Man. In recent decades the isle of Man has experienced an increase in immigration with under half the population being Manx-born. The increase in immigration has resulted in some sections of the Island's population fearing for the future of the Island's history, heritage and culture. Manx National Heritage holds a unique position enshrined in law as the single designated body to protect, preserve and present the Island's heritage. The dissertation aims to investigate how MNH presents the Isle of Man's national and cultural identity and whether it provides an effective interpretative strategy. Chapters cover the research methology, defining themes and concepts, an overview of the Isle of Man and MNH, MNH sites and tangible and intangible heritage. Appendices contain a curatorial interview pro forma, MNH site visitor survey, Friends of MNH focus group question route, MNH interpretive strand and theme analysis matrix, MNH survey site selection rationale matrix, MNH visitor survey raw data tables, graphs and word clouds and Manx National Curriculum: history.
