Scope & Content: Cowley worked in Foxdale and Laxey mines and at the Irish fishing between 1877 and 1911. He records that he started on the Faragher View Dressing Floors aged 12 1/2 in 1877 and started to work underground at Foxdale mines in 1881. He worked also in Townsend Mine (Cornelly), at the fishing in Berehaven and Baltimore, Ireland, constructing the Foxdale railway, at Laxey mine and Bawdens and Beckwiths shafts, Foxdale. Between 1895 and 1911, when the mine closed, Cowley was Deputy at Foxdale. His account includes mention of work related accidents.
Administration / Biographical History: William John Cowley (1865-1938), son of Elizabeth Callister, married Jane Killey at Marown Church in December 1891. The couple had 7 children, five of whom died in childhood or early adulthood.
