Hans Breitenstrater, boxer at Knockaloe Internment Camp

Scope & Content: Hans Breitenstrater was a merchant sailor before the First World War. His ship, a sailing vessel, was intercepted by the Royal Navy and Breitenstrater was interned at Knockaloe as an enemy alien. In the camp, sport became his salvation from the crushing monotony and in particular he took up boxing. After the war, Breitenstrater continued to box professionally in Germany, his career reaching its peak in the mid 1920s. He also featured in early films in Germany.
