Pastoral letter from Bishop James Denton Thompson, Bishopscourt, with instructions to be read on 'Sunday next Morning and Evening' in the parish churches of the Isle of Man
Date(s): June 1921
Creator(s): Thompson, James Denton
Scope & Content: Bishop James invites special and sustained prayer for 'our King our Statesmen and all who hold responsible office in any part of the Empire. The difficulties which confront these public men are so grave as to call for the output of every gift of wisdom and understanding which may be theirs'. He does not specify all matters to which he is alluding but does mention 'the tragedy and confusion of present-day life in Ireland' (Irish war of independence) and 'the Industrial situation, which changes its aspect from day to day' (high unemployment, deflation and depression). In closing he asks that he be remembered also in prayer; he is temporarily withdrawing from active work following an accident in London which proved more serious than initially thought. This copy of the letter was found in a Lezayre service register, part of deposit MS 13772.
