Administration / Biographical History: In October 1996 the Centre for Manx Studies began a three year study investigating the variation of English on the Isle of Man. At the outset, In conjunction with the University of Liverpool, two full time doctorate and four part time Masters students were to concentrate on various sociolinguistic aspects wtihin ths field. The two stated objectives of the project were to study the Manx-English dialect, concentrating largely but not exclusively on elderly rural informants. The second aspect concerned contemporary English in Man, examining a representative sample generated through local school involvement. For this the 'Speaking History' theme was developed whereby pupils were to conduct recorded interviews with close relatives.
