Wrecked trawler 'Crown'
Date(s): 1890-1920
Creator(s): Southward, Francis
Scope & Content: This shipwreck is on the rocks below Ballafayle, Maughold. The 'Lady Kate' is pictured taking cargo off the stricken ship. The 'Crown' belonged to the Crown Steam Fishing Company Limited of Grimsby. On 6 November 1906 she left Fleetwood bound for fishing off the west coast of Scotland. The captain went below around 3.30pm asking to be called at 6.00pm. This did not happen and at 7.45pm she struck the rocks below Ballafayle at Traie-ny-Saig. The boat began to take in water and when it reached the deck the small boat was launched and the crew of 10 made it to a nearby creek. Several attempts were made to try and salvage her but she broke in two during a storm in February 1907.
