Cardle Wesleyan Chapel
Date(s): 1890-1920
Creator(s): Southward, Francis
Scope & Content: Built in 1815; now demolished. Originally it was only partly floored, had three box pews on either side, the remainder of the floor was beaten earth as was to be found in the vast majority of cottages at this time and for many years to come. In 1830 a gallery was added which had an external staircase on the front of the building which shows in this photograph. The windows are sliding sash - no gothic or Roman arches in the early chapels. The verges (edges of the roof) have bricks set on top of the slates to stop wind lift. A new chapel was built alongside on the down side of the hill and opened on March 4, 1910. The old chapel became a Sunday School and in 1925 had a 'make over' which included the removal of the external staircase.
