'Manx Workers Process Escallops for Paris
NEW MANX COMPANY BOOSTS LOCAL INDUSTRY
Manx escallops for over twenty years have been mostly sent in sacks to Billingsgate Market in London, and the carriage charges reached really staggering figures over the years...
But now thanks to the enterprise and enthusiasm of Mr. Alfred Devereau, the well-known Manx fish merchant and Manx kipper curer, a great deal of this inconvenience and cost has been eliminated and a new Manx company has been formed, named Seaborn (Isle of Man) Limited, to process and quick-freeze the escallops in the Isle of Man a few hours after the shells have been taken from the water...
The processing is in the experimental stages, but the twenty women workers engaged at Peel seemed very efficient, and the work was being carried out quickly without any fuss.' (Thursday 26 May 1960, Isle of Man Examiner)
