Radio Caroline disc jockeys Dave Lee Travis and Tony Prince on Radio Caroline boat, Ramsey harbourside

Date(s): September 1967

Creator(s): Manx Press Pictures

Scope & Content: Disc jockeys Tony Prince and Dave Lee Travis arrive in Ramsey after leaving Radio Caroline for the last time. The unpopular Marines Broadcasting Offences Act meant it was now illegal for them to broadcast from the ‘pirate radio ship’.

Radio Caroline arrived off Ramsey Bay on 5 July 1964. Although heralded as a ‘pirate radio ship’, she was legally operating in Manx waters. Radio Caroline reached a huge audience and generated fantastic publicity for the Isle of Man. For a short time in the 1960s the Isle of Man was the hippest place to visit! This all came to an abrupt end when Harold Wilson’s Government sought to close down the pirate radio ships. It sparked a constitutional crisis on the Island.

Administration / Biographical History: Dave Lee Travis (on left with life ring) and Tony Prince (right with badges on jacket).
