'Investigations on the scallop 'Pecten maximus (L.)' in Manx waters'

Date(s): 1953

Creator(s): Mason, James

Scope & Content: Illustrated PhD thesis submitted to University of Liverpool by a student at the Marine Biological Station, Port Erin which sets out to provide a knowledge of the life-history, rate of growth and breeding habits of the scallop in Manx waters. Mason writes, 'A fishery of the scallop is carried on round the Isle of Man, and such a knowledge, together with information as to the state of the scallop beds, would be useful if any legislation became necessary with regard to the fishery'. He observes that beds in an inshore area off Port Erin are showing signs of overfishing and offers suggestions for allowing these beds to recover, for conserving the stocks on other beds and for improving the marketing of Manx scallops. Contains loose leaf enclosures including a three page summary of findings and six page copy of Government Analyst's Laboratory report on analysis of scallops, 29 July 1953. (Port Erin ref: ZAT 004).
