Draft letters from Mark H Quayle, Castletown, Isle of Man to Edward Busk, Pump Court, Temple, London

Date(s): 19 March 1796

Creator(s): Quayle, Mark H.

Scope & Content: Draft letters from Mark H Quayle to Edward Busk. Mark forwards a bill for £200 to Edward as payment of his father's salary for the previous year, the money having been sent to him by Mr Wilson by power of attorney. He confirms that to render a deed affecting property in the Island acceptable in law (even in the UK) it must be signed in the presence of a bailiff or deemster. However he knows of no time limit. In a second letter (23 June 1797), he apologises for the delay and says he applied to Mr Wilson for Busk's salary to 8 September, which was refused until he had official notice from the Governor of the request. Mark then explains various delays, due in part to a sum owed by Mr Busk complicating matters, and asks how he should act. In a third letter (25 June 1797), he sends another bill for £120 in payment of the balance of the salary. In a fourth letter (24 July 1797), he sends another and final bill for the salary, having forced Mr Bacon to pay up with interest. In a fifth draft (8 April 1798), he informs William Busk that he has applied for arrears of the father's pension and attaches a bill for it.
