Castletown Building Survey

Administration / Biographical History: For two and a half weeks in March and April 1989, CMS carried out an archaeological survey of Castletown’s building stock with students enrolled on the L.S. Butler teaching excavation at Rushen Abbey. The survey was led by Jen Lewis and Jenny Woodcock. The area surveyed was the historic core of Castletown and detailed external recording for each building, and an examination of the relationships between building plots, was carried out.

A total of 536 buildings were photographed and recorded from the following streets:

Malew Street/Hope Street,
Malew Street/Mill Street,
Crofts,
Athol Terrace,
Milner Terrace,
Malew Street/Mill Meadow (beyond railway line),
Bridge Street,
Castletown Brewery & School lane,
Victoria Road/ Douglas Street (first folder),
Queen Street,
Castle Street/The Parade,
Arbory Street/Malew Street (second folder)

The written statement within the Castletown Conservation Area 1:2500 town plan (1988)’, was used thought out this survey.
