16 01 2001 NCJ to J O Williams interest in additional fieldwork; a 3-page set of notes on Staged archaeological assessment is attached.

Administration / Biographical History: The Centre for Manx Studies (CMS) was approached by Burroughs Steward Associates who had been appointed by the Isle of Man Government's Department of Transport to project manage the submission of necessary planning approvals for both the short and long-term development of Poortown Quarry. They needed advice in three areas: first on identifying independent research into road-stone grade materials at Poortown. Secondly, whether any additional desk-top assessment was necessary in consideration of the archaeological impacts of the proposed extension area and thirdly, whether CMS would be interested in undertaking an ecological survey?

The archaeological assessment already carried out by Messrs Wardell Armstrong was considered adequate, but was not watertight. CMS advised that it would be necessary to undertake structured fieldwalking of the ‘red-lined area’ and was prepared to bid for the work.

The Centre did not wish to bid for the ecological survey and suggested that contact be made with Dr David Quirk for information regarding the geology issues at Poortown.
