Castletown post medieval pottery collection from 9 Malew Street, Castletown

Date(s): 1994

Creator(s): Centre for Manx Studies

Scope & Content: Notes on a collection of post-medieval pottery and glass found at 9 Malew Street, Castletown in January 1994 – typed and annotated (2 pages); one sheet of pencil notes.
Ten pages of photocopy 1:1 Illustrations of the pottery by S White.

Administration / Biographical History: A collection of imported post medieval pottery (46 ceramic sherds from a minimum of 24 vessels) and glass shards (2 vessels) were recovered in January 1994 from 9 Malew Street, Castletown during the excavation of a sump at the rear of the property. The owner requested Dr Peter Davey to review the material.

The collection was assessed by PJD and dated to the 17th and 18th centuries and was particularly interesting as it threw light into the quality of life in Castletown during the eighteenth century. Castle Rushen Stores produced good groups of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century material but were lacking quality finds for the eighteenth-century; the material discovered at 9 Malew Street is located only a few meters away from the Stores and covers the whole of the century with a deposition date suggested to be 1800.
