Dissolution of the Monasteries monograph

Date(s): 2001-2010

Creator(s): Centre for Manx Studies

Administration / Biographical History: The production of a monograph on Rushen Abbey was stimulated by two main reasons; the purchase of the Rushen Abbey site by the Isle of Man Government and the discovery of a new administrative document (belonging to the Island) which had been incorrectly filed in the Public Records Office (PRO) in London. The new document was the full listing and administrative accounts of the Dissolution of Rushen Abbey and the other Manx monastic establishments overseen by the Court of Augmentations - the body placed in charge of overseeing the Dissolution finances of all of the English and Welsh monasteries.

Jim Roscow was working on the rent books from the 16th c. Manx legal documents. He had been to London with the aim of transcribed them, the accounts were photographed and transliteration was already underway, with 1540 being the focal document. Due to this, it was decided that the information gained from the two documents should be brought together and produced as a monograph publication.

The monograph was a direct outcome of a joint lecture given by Roscow and Davey to the Antiquarians in Douglas and Ramsey on the 12th and 15th February 2000.

Transcribed by Jim Roscow, checked by the late Robert Thomson
Production of the following publication:
