Scope & Content: Volume begins the handwritten 'Report and Diary of a Political Prisoner kept at Castle Rushen in the Isle of Man written by James Brown' with later scrapbook-style inserts including newscuttings and ephemera about Brown and other family members. Brown relays events from March-May 1864 with inserted newscuttings and a mixture of reporting and diary entries. The volume has additional biographical and genealogical entries, scrap-book style, including newscuttings, letters and printed ephemera relating to Brown and his son James William Ross Brown KC. Looseleaf inserts include a sepia image of James Brown whilst incarcerated in Castle Rushen with explanatory caption by his son, a leaflet noting his death and a printed poem penned by T.E. Brown.
