'The Ancient Insular Copper Coinage'
Date(s): 25 September 1840
Scope & Content: Printed by J Quiggin in Castletown of John Kelly, High Bailiff of Castletown this notice sets out the constraints and circumstances resulting in the passing of an Act of Tynwald assimiliating the copper currency of the Island with that of the United Kingdom. High Bailiff Kelly endeavours to persuade Islanders that the legislation favours those buying goods, tabulating the price of goods before and after the Act came into effect to show the benefit to the purchaser not the seller of goods.
He reassures the public that 'The new Coin is of equal weight and value with the English Coin, and will pass current in England. The impression of the Manks Arms on the Coinage was intended as complimentary, and not meant to confine the circulation to the Island only. When the Currency of Ireland was changed she still retained her Harp. Let not dissension and insurbordination deprive Mona of her Legs.'
