Scope & Content: Nellie Mitchell talks to Yvonne Cresswell about her memories of Archibald Knox, Art Nouveau artist and designer (1864-1933). She talks about, as a student, first meeting ‘Archie Knox’ in 1928 at the Douglas School of Art and how Knox was appointed as art teacher by Mr Taggart; Knox deliberately destroying his work in the Isle of Man and never exhibiting on the island; being taught art as a student by Peter Chisholm, Principle Art Master at the Douglas School of Art (1875-1962); how Knox wasn’t interested in teaching art and the nature of the art class with Knox; her opinion of Norman Sayle, artist (1926-2007) and Eric Houlgrave, potter (1917-2001) both of whom taught her son Brian art classes in Douglas; her son’s photography career; her recent illnesses.

Conversation then turns to Nellie’s memories of Cunningham’s Camp in the Isle of Man during the Second World War including her time catering at the camp; her time nursing in the Lake District during the Second World War and her nurse exams in England; knitting and sewing; her father’s decorating apprentices; working at the Military Hospital in Douglas and caring for a soldier.

Margaret, Nellie's sister, interjects in the background; her uncle (mother’s brother) story which Margaret also talks about; and other brief notes about her family and her life now.
