Scope & Content: Albert Gostlow talks to Nicola Tooms about his time as head gardener at Rushen Abbey from 1973. Albert talks about starting in 1973 when he was employed by Walter Gilbey as head gardener; bad state of the gardens when he took over and the hard work to restore them; there being eight gardeners; jam making across the river opposite his house; how people would visit and stay the whole day and dance to the organ and admire the flowers; Morris dancers; evening entertainment; dancing; organ-playing in restaurant when it was raining; living there in the winter to keep an eye on the gardens; working there twelve years, living there the whole time; Mr Gilbey's horses; joint owners in 1975, Mr Ken Daley and Walter Gilbey; Derek Telford, editor of National Begonia Society. He mentions being a hairdresser before working at Rushen Abbey.
