Scope & Content: Joyce (‘Joy’) Little talks to Nicola Tooms about her time as a child evacuee in the Isle of Man during the Second World War. Joy talks about her evacuation from Liverpool to the Isle of Man in 1940, 1941 with her mother and sister; living in 6 Laureston Terrace, Douglas with Mrs Leece and American soldiers; moving to house opposite Murrays Road School; going to Murrays Road School; living in one of the Nissen huts in Ballasalla and the community there; going to Castle Rushen school in Castletown.

After finishing school at the age of 14 she talks about leaving home and getting her first job ‘in service’ in Port Erin and then working in Claughbane hotel in Douglas on the Central Promenade. She mentions her sister Dorothy (who lives in the Isle of Man). She talks about how at the age of 21 she got engaged and moved to Glasgow and got a job with Littlewoods’ Football Pools; moving to Los Angeles; marrying in 1965; her two sons; living in Essex.

Conversation returns to her time as an evacuee in the Isle of Man and how she was not allowed to take sweets from, or talk to, the Italian internees in Douglas; Nissen huts in Ballasalla and the school near the brewery in Castletown; playing near Rushen Abbey; living in ‘digs’ in Liverpool before moving to the Isle of Man; Lowey and other Manx families she remembers.
