Administration / Biographical History: The Regal Cinema in Douglas started its life in 1882 as the Grand Theatre, based near the end of Victoria Street between the Jubilee Buildings and Salisbury House. By the end of that century the Grand Theatre began including films as part of its variety programming and transitioned fully into the Grand Picturedome by 1909.

Rebuilt and rebranded as the New Regal Cinema in 1935, the Regal would be host to more than film – the famous organist George Tootell played to both tourist crowds and on the airwaves, his recitals broadcast annually on the BBC’s radio service through the 1930s. As the Isle of Man’s tourist-based economy dwindled after the Second World War, the Regal eventually ended up in the possession of the Palace & Derby Company in the 1960s and was opened only during the summer. The Regal was closed in 1982 and then demolished in 1983 and the site has been redeveloped twice since then.
