Crop harvesting in the Isle of Man

https://youtu.be/4zD4y_dy4_0

Date(s): 1930-1950

Creator(s): Royston, J. Walter

Scope & Content: Opens with the sign 'Cardle Veg'. 'Cardle' is a place name and 'Veg' is Manx Gaelic for 'small'. The film shows life on a Manx farm in the late summer including farming methods used at harvest time in the mid-20th century.

The film captures the move from manual ways of farming, traditionally used for centuries, to newer mechanised farming methods which were quicker and more efficient. Horses still plough the fields and pull carts and scythes cut the crops. There are also tractors and binders. There is plenty of the rural Manx landscape with picturesque views of rolling hills and traditional Manx stone farmhouses.
