Creator(s): Royston, J. Walter
Scope & Content: Arts and crafts including stamping, weaving, ink transferring, calligraphy and drawing.
Opened in 1880, the School of Art was originally in Castle Street, Douglas. In 1884 the school was moved to a new, purpose built building in Kensington Road, Douglas. During the First World War the school continued to offer day time classes as well as night time classes for people who wanted to gain qualifications. The school remained open both during the day and at night during the Second World War, for both those who were studying art as a qualification, but now also for those who wanted to learn new skills for their own enjoyment. In 1943 the school changed its name to 'The School of Arts and Crafts' to represent a new number of craft classes added to the curriculum. The film credits the school as 'The School of Art' which suggests the film was made prior to 1943. Notable alumni include Archibald Knox, who went on to become a teacher at the school.
