'The Development of the Mechanical Wristwatch'

Date(s): 2019

Creator(s): Smith, Roger W.

Scope & Content: Typescript illustrated lecture notes for a presentation delivered on 27 November 2019 as the annual George Daniels lecture at City, University of London. Dr Smith discusses developments in modern mechanical wristwatches and proposes that, in recent decades, this has led to a regression, rather than a progression of the practical qualities of watches. He shares his own observations from developing mechanical wristwatches and offers his own solutions to improving longevity and performance.

Smith recalls working with the late George Daniels in the Isle of Man from the 1990s and Smith's development from 2004 of his first production wristwatch movement, his Series 2, the world's first production movement designed around the co-axial escapement. A re-design ensued in 2015 when the 6 'mil' diameter escape wheel was reduced to 4.5 'mil escapement.
