Scope & Content: Robert Kelly talks to David Callister (on the programme 'Mandate') about old wireless sets and a course in the History of the Manx Media. Robert talks about his search for old wireless sets and names some of the types he is looking for, made in Douglas by Manx people; Isle of Man needing wireless receivers powerful enough to receive signals from the UK; first Isle of Man manufacturer Sidney Hinton who designed and assembled the Hinton TR2; Harold Coleburne and Kermode establishing Manx Radio; Lt Commander Silvester Quine, the Hawley Brothers of Victoria Road, Ernie and Guy Dickinson from Manx Radio Rentals, Harmel in Victory House Douglas; 1930s courses for the unemployed held in Castle Street for people to join the wireless industry; local cabinet makers employed; a course he will be running on the History of Manx Media at St Ninian's School which goes back to the first newspapers; the bell men; the sumners; the politicians promulgating laws from Tynwald Hill; travelling beggars and folk doctors known as jinnies; no evidence of ballad singers on the island; the bell men dispensed information to Manx speakers as the early newspapers were aimed at English speakers; how newspapers took days to get to the Isle of Man; some people hired newspapers by the day or bought second or third hand papers; some subjects covered in the course include 'The Power of a Kiss' - why did a kissing survey in Douglas led to the banning of Mickey Mouse Years later, the story of censorship.
