Date(s): 2021
Creator(s): Manley, John
Scope & Content: Copy of illustrated 4,000 word 2nd year assignment submitted as UCM coursework towards the BA History and Heritage degree. The author presents biographical information about John Taubman, describes his business interests and networks and writes about his involvement in slavery. He notes that in 1790 twelve fellow Members of the House of Keys were Taubman's relatives and four more were associates out of a total of twenty four. Manley writes, 'His political power ran parallel wiht his business acumen. His influence over Manx affairs led to the Duke labelling him, and his business partner, John Quayle, 'the cursed crew of Taubmans and Quayles'. His dominance of island business, and political affairs, during his lifetime was unmatched, and served as a role model to his peers. His legacy was quite remarkable, in that his son succeeded him as Speaker of the House, and the Taubman family contintued to dominate Manx trade, and politics, into successive generations'.
