'Know Your Parish' talk by John Quilliam about Ballaugh

Audio Player:

Date(s): after 1967 and before 1979

Scope & Content: John Quilliam starts by describing the area and boundaries of the parish of Ballaugh, sheading of Michael; names of features in Manx or Norse. He explains that they used to be hunting grounds; describes terrain and explains that place names with ‘laugh’ indicate 'lake'. He gives the meaning of some Manx village names, e.g. Balla Mona, Ballabeg, Lagan, etc. He talks about an old story of a stranger who cut down the tramman trees, said to be the hiding place of the fairies, and how the fairies returned resulting in a battle between the fairies for new hiding places and the cutting off of ears (ears like fungus on trees); ‘when in Ballaugh be like the people of Ballaugh’.

He then gives the origins of Manx surnames, e.g. Cameron, Campbell, Crowe.

Tape ends mid-sentence.
