Scope & Content: Starts with Manx Gaelic for ‘good day’. John Quilliam talks about the parish of Lonan in the sheading of Garff in which he mentions the Act of Tynwald of 1796 that defined the parishes and Lonan and Maughold in Garff; Scandinavian origins of the name Garff, surnames and place names; Manx name of the parish; the parish fair held near old Lonan church and later in Laxey; place name meanings including Agneash and Minorca, etc.; the story of the buggane, the malicious fairy, captured in Laxey; stories of the glashen, the good fairy, helping the farmers; and he explains the origin of certain surnames including Scarffe, Sayle and Robynson, etc., and known individuals and families from the parish.
