Scope & Content: David Callister talks to Dick Shimmin, Isle of Man Railways worker (who was born in 1927) about his service with Isle of Man Railways and about farming. Interviewee recalls joining Isle of Man Railways aged 15 in 1942 and he talks about the fleet; staff; freight; daily running of the services; buildings at Douglas Railway Station. He describes the day-to-day running and growing-up on farms; Mullyn y Cloy, St Johns; Mr Quaggin; St Johns Mart and the staff at the railway station; Foxdale line closing; moving to Seamount Farm, Dalby and how in 1939 the Air Ministry bought two fields for radar masts; Ballavar, Santon; legend of two witches rolled down Slieu Whallian; St Johns village; smithies’ jobs; Mr Partington from Peel who rented radios.
