Administration / Biographical History: Samuel Rutter (d. 1663) was nominated as Archdeacon of Man in 1640. He wrote numerous pieces of poetry for the Earl of Derby's amusement, but not many of them have been published. Rutter served as Chaplain to 7th Earl of Derby and was at Lathom House, Lancs during its first siege. He was also ‘the chosen friend counsellor, and afterwards chaplain, of the noble-minded Countess, during all her troubles, and it was principally through her influence that he succeeded to the bishopric’ (in 1661). Bishop Rutter is buried in St German’s Cathedral, St Patrick's Isle, Peel.
